The Velvet Underground (VU) war eine experimentelle Rockband aus den 1960er-Jahren.
In ihrer Anfangsformation bestand sie aus Lou Reed (Gitarre, Gesang), John Cale (Bass, Viola, Keyboard und Gesang), Angus MacLise / Maureen Tucker (Schlagzeug), Sterling Morrison (Gitarre) und interim Nico (Gesang) auf dem Debütalbum. Der Bandname bezieht sich auf ein Buch von Michael Leigh über Sadomasochismus, das ein Freund von Reed und Morrison zufällig im Müll gefunden hatte.
